Jan van den Hecke the Elder was a versatile Antwerp Baroque painter, who specialised above all in flower (and fruit) still lifes.
He was active in Antwerp, but also stayed in Brussels, Rome and possibly France, where he worked for important patrons, such as Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria and Duke Paolo Giordano II Orsini.
The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna holds several flower still lifes painted by our painter for Archduke Leopold Wilhelm. Another of these paintings is in the Rijksmuseum in Enschede.
