Green half-morocco with corners, back with ornate nerves, all golden edges. Illustrated edition of 250 lithographs.
Excellent condition for this rare copy with the first 3 volumes Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia enhanced in watercolor.

First edition in in - 4 format (29 x 20 cm), with historical descriptions by the Reverend. George Croly.
Complete set of 250 tinted lithographs, including the frontispiece portrait of David Roberts in the first volume, a frontispiece of the temple at Abu Simbel and the visit card in the second, as well as the 6 lithographed title pages and printed lists when each volume opens.
Our copy is certainly part of a special order from the publisher, the lithographs being finely enhanced in watercolor on the first 3 volumes illustrating Syria, Israel, Jordan, Palestine, Arabia and Lebanon.

David Roberts was born in Scotland in 1796. He acquired the reputation of a major artist when in 1838 he traveled to Egypt and the Holy Land in order to paint monuments, architecture and inhabitants. On his return to England, his works were published (with the help of lithographer Louis Haghe).
