Pair of Wooden Tuscan Statues, late 17th century

Pair of statues, carved in the round, in gilded and polychrome wood 210 cm high including a 100 cm marble base depicting two male figures from the Tuscan school of the end of the 1700s.

With great pleasure and enthusiasm, I publish this beautiful pair of characters in sculpted wood in the round, a real jewel destined for lovers of the high age and sculptures in particular. Undoubtedly, even for the neophytes of this field of art, it is the emotion that one feels when observing such expressive works, as full of strength, as can be seen from the faces of the two figures in question. The two works of art, pictured here in detail, were vigorously carved in the wood around the 60s / 70s of the 17th century.

They are depicted standing, with the body and face taken frontally, in an almost sacred attitude, with a harmonious, gentle and wavy movement of the body and drapery with a result of highly dramatic style, full of strength. The presence of much of their polychromy and original gilding, marked by a thick craquelè, is extraordinary for works of this era. We can say that by age and conservation they are collectors' items, rare on the market.

The qualitative level of this work is remarkable, evident both in the virtuous pose of the young people, and in the analytical rendering of the anatomical and expressive data. The chiastic pose, in which the opposite arm and leg correspond, concludes the elegant realization of the body. Noteworthy some details of the composition, including the yield of the hair rather than the intertwining of the drapery. In conclusion, the whole composition is very effective, where the realization of the two characters become the occasion for the seventeenth-century sculptor to make an in-depth investigation of the real data described.

I would dwell on the very pleasant workmanship, found above all in the drapery of the garments; The unquestionable hardness of the features must be considered from the perspective of the most famous representations of the same subject and should not be confused with the lack of quality. Polychromy is coeval. As regards the state of preservation, the wooden structure is intact. Note the intense expressiveness of the faces and the vivid colors of the dress and coat.
