Suite of Four Armchairs by Georges Jacob

Became a Master in 1765

Transition from the Louis XV and Louis XVI periods, circa 1765/1770
Dimensions: H. 35.4 x W. 23.6 x D. 24 inches

This is a suite of four cabriolet armchairs in sculpted beech wood and lacquered in a creamy white.

The upper part of the chair conforms to the decorative repertoire of the Louis XV period: vigorous violin backs and beautiful coup de fouet armrests. However, the tapered and fluted legs indicate the emerging neoclassical style which is the return of a repertoire inspired by antiquity.

All of these chairs bear the stamp of Georges Jacob, who became a Master in 1765. He is the most famous chair maker of the second half of the 18th century in France.

These chairs are of a remarkable quality. The balance of the proportions, the deep and precise molding, the movement of the coup de fouet armrests, and the quality of the beech wood, are all elements that validate the prestigious signature that they bear.

The condition of the chairs is impeccable. The frames of all of the chairs are completely original. The wood is healthy, and the lacquer is original except for some wear and tear restorations.
