He studied painting at Paul-Émile Barberi's studio and at the age of eighteen went to study in Florence.
Joseph Fricero married Josephine Koberwein (Youzia Iossifovna Koberwein), the natural daughter of Tsar Nicholas I of Russia and Marianne Koberwein, in Marseille on 3 January 1849. They have four sons, and a descent of this union remains today.
