Extremely rare for the time, this beautiful piece of woodwork has retained its rich original polychrome. In terms of its shape, it could be here a crowning element for a cupboard type furniture for example, or for an altarpiece. Taken between two entablatures, a richly ornamented medallion is supported in the center of the composition by two hybrid anthropomorphic creatures with spread wings. Against the central medallion, they support an entablature on which rests a composition of wrapped leathers, assembled around a baby face coming to crowned the structure.
The heart of the central medallion reveals a Madonna del Latte (nursing Virgin), tender subject much appreciated by Italian artists of the Renaissance. From a stylistic point of view, it can be approximated by its antiquing aspect, its size, and its heavy draperies of the work of Jacopo Sansovino, and more particularly of his Madonna and Child of the Sant'Agostino church of Rome.
