verso: A Portrait of a Man with a Hat
Wearing a top hat and dressed in a white shirt under a black jacket, our man sports the fashions of 1790–1800. The slightly open collar and his dreamy manner suggest that he could be a man of letters or an artistic personality. Among other portraits representing artists with a top hat, we can mention Jean-Antoine Gros at the age of 23 (Musée des Augustins Toulouse, inv. n° RO 109), Alexandre Lenoir by Marie Geneviève Bouliard (Musée Carnavalet Paris, inv. n° P27) and The Self-Portrait of Anne-Louis Girodet (Musée National des Châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon, inv. n° MV 4642).
