Adolphe Jacques Barthélémy Appian (Lyon 1818 – 1898 Lyon): River Landscape with a Fisherman in a Boat
315 x 497 mm, 123/8x 195/8inch.
Signed and dated in charcoal lower left: Appian/1894
A famous charcoal draftsman, Appian plays with the reserve of the paper and the gray tones of the charcoal to draw the effects of light and atmosphere. Rivers and streams that mirror the trees or large expanses of sky were his favorite themes. Here, the artist has slightly erased the charcoal on the river to create the movement of water. Our drawing is a fine example of Adolphe Appian’s art.
