Virgin of the Annunciation - Guyenne, Late 15th century

This sculpture cut in a fine limestone extracted in Poitou represents a young woman, hand on the chest, carrying a book. This attribute and this gesture of self-designation, expressing surprise and disbelief, allow us to identify here a Virgin of Annunciation. In fact, according to the text of the Gospels, Gabriel, the archangel messenger, interrupts Mary during her prayer to announce that she will give birth to the son of God. Her youthful physiognomy with her small, stretched eyes and pinched mouth is reminiscent of the charming Virgin of Annunciation of Ouradou (Aveyron), or that of the Musée Fénaille de Rodez. However, its greater sobriety brings it closer to the little saints sheltered under the mantle of a great Ursula saint in the round, preserved in the basilica of Saint-Michel de Bordeaux
