A rare statue of the Virgin & Child - so-called "poupée de Malines" - holding a reliquary which contains the original relic behind glass.
Carved in walnut which has retained its original gilding and polychrome paint. The large plinth underneath is carved in oak and is kept in place with the original wrought iron nails.
Mechelen/Malines. 1st quarter of the 16th century.

A statue which is very similar in style and possibly carved by the same sculptor (but without the reliquary) is published in "Préliminaires à l'inventaire général des statuettes d'origine malinoise présumées des XVe et XVIe siècle" by Willy GODENNE - plate LXXV.
