Virgin and child in lime-tree - South of Germany, beginning of the 16th cen

This lime tree sculpture represents the Virgin standing, carrying the Child Jesus naked. According to the iconographic tradition, this nudity emphasizes the human nature of the incarnate god, who carry here in his left hand the "orb", symbol of his spiritual and temporal dominion over the world.
Her mother is richly dressed in a white tunic covered with a purple robe and a coat of gold and azure. Folded into an apron at the level of her knees, it fall in elaborate folds, alternating smooth planes and nested V-breaks. In her left hand, Mary carries a scepter symbolizing her kingship. This attribute is very present in the German representations of the Virgin of the late fifteenth century and early sixteenth century. This is particularly the case on a 1460s German xylography preserved at the University of Wisconsin (USA), or on the famous print "The Virgin on a crescent moon, with a starry crown and a scepter" by Dürer in 1516. The plump physiognomy of Christ, the face of Mary framed by an undulating hair with refined curls cascading over her shoulders and her sophisticated drapery corroborates this lead and invite us to attribute this sculpture to the South of Germany and to date it from the early years 16th century.
