Romanesque Madonna and Child, Spain, XII-XIIIth century

Beautiful Romanesque sculpture, representing a Madonna and Child, made in polychrome resinous wood. Castile, XII-XIIIth century.

Despite its wear and the loss of polychromy, the piece conserves the "soul" of Romanesque style: the artist achieved the majesty of the character as well as her deep humanity, through the hieratic posture and the sweetness and peace transmitted with the Virgin's expression.

Unlike the rest of the body, the Virgin's face presents a good polychromy conditon: the subtle pinkish tones on the cheeks and even the delicate strokes rendering the eyelashes contribute to the effect of gentleness and fragility. On the other hand, some red, gold and black colour are also visible on the upper part of the Virgin's collar. The sculpture shows therefore scarce painted areas, but it is nevertheless its original polychromy, a noteworthy fact since most surviving Romanesque sculptures present later period painting layers.

Certainly from the kingdom of Castile, this sculpture was possibly made in Leon or Palencia.
