Dish with a giraffe, Les Islettes France, 19th century

Faience round dish with polychrome decoration of a giraffe with a young man.
FRANCE, Les Islettes. Circa 1830. 19th century.
Diameter : 26,5 cm or 10,4 po.

In the 19th century, the giraffe is seen as the archetypal exotic animal. Provided with an extraordinary size and with a neck of an outstanding length, this giraffe of two years comes to us from Nubia. It was a present of the Pasha Mehemet-Ali to Charles X, the King of France. Thus, it made a long journey. Embarked on a boat of the city of Alexandria, it landed in the port of Marseille in November 1826. Then, the giraffe was escorted by the director of the Museum of Jardin des Plantes from Marseille to Paris.
The giraffe and its escort arrived on June 30th, 1827 in the heart of the capital under the admiring glance of the Parisians, before being presented to Charles X in Saint-Cloud. Once the royal visit was made, it was accommodated in the Jardin des Plantes of Paris, where it lived peacefully during more than twenty years.
