An oil on cardboard, landscape with hamlet signed below right, and dedicated to a friend by Victor CHARRETON
Born on March 2, 1864 at the Château de Bourgoin (Isère). Died November 26, 1936 in Clermont-Ferrand.
Painter of landscapes, flowers, gouache painter, pastellist. Postimpressionist
Adolescent from a wealthy family, a geometrical painter, he already loves poetry and painting, and practices the latter as an amateur/ He will study law at the Faculty of Grenoble and will be admitted to the Court of Appeal.
Endowed with great sensitivity and very cultured, his painting companions are Ernest Hareux, Armand Balouzet and Louis Japy.
In 1893, he married Elmy Chatin, daughter of an entrepreneur from La Sauvetat (Puy-de-Dôme). It is with a view of Montpeyroux (Puy-de-Dôme) that he first exhibited in 1894 at the Salon de la Société Lyonnaise des Beaux-Arts. The acquisition of a house in Saint-Ammand-Tallende (Puy-de Dôme) further strengthens its ties with Auvergne.
He started at the Lyon Salon in 1894 and then in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français.
He received many medals: honourable mention in 1910, silver medal in 1912, gold medal in 1913. He participated in exhibitions throughout France, but also in Geneva New York, Japan... In 1902, he sold his study to devote himself to his art. Using both cardboard and canvas, he uses both knife and brush.
In 1903 he co-founded the Salon d'Automne with the painter Bonnard. Its success is fast and its reputation quickly exceeds the circle of salons. He was decorated with the Legion of Honour as a painter in 1914.
President of numerous exhibition juries, he works on the writing of articles on the purpose of art and theories of colour. It also examines the techniques of conservation of works. This research allowed him to discover painting on "finette" (fluffy fabric that allowed him to reinforce the vaporous character of his paintings). It was during the war that he lived the longest in Auvergne, where he concentrated on snow and tried to extract all its aspects (icy, powdery, etc.).
His work is marked by an intimate treatment of the landscape, preferring details to vast spaces, and giving little space to the strong points of the landscape of Wallonia, such as the castle, the lake and the Dent du Marais.
A leading artist, his success is still evident today. He was in contact with many personalities (art critics, politicians, painters, etc.). Its membership of the Murol(s) school is a major asset for the school.
