This charming gouache from the late 19th century, in its original setting, represents a view of the city of Naples. Instead of representing the classic view of Naples on its bay and the volcano of Vesuvius, the artist decided to focus on the city itself. This pastel-coloured landscape represents the view of "Napoli dal Campo".
This path, with three characters, is surmounted by a tall pine-parasol. A man and a woman are talking while a carriage is going up the track. In the background, the port, opening onto the Tyrrhenian Sea, is shown, as well as two hills with a large number of buildings on the side, including about twenty church domes.
It is important to highlight the great dexterity of the artist, Giuseppe Scoppa (1854-1940), particularly in the treatment of light and space, whose signature is affixed at the bottom left.
