Virgin of majesty - Eastern Pyrenees - early 14th century

This Virgin of Majesty, known as "sedes sapientiae", still has her original polychrome and gilding. She is depicted in a hieratic way sitting on a throne with the child Jesus on her lap. The Virgin faces the spectator, she holds in her right hand a sphere and her divine son in her left arm. The latter is represented in Pantocrator. He owns the Holy Book and blesses the faithful with his opposite hand. Through her maternal attitude, by holding her son in her arms, it is the role of mother of God, Theotokos, that the artist wishes to evoke. This aspect is redoubled by the similarity of the round and benevolent faces of the two holy characters who create a filiation between the Mother and her Son.

The stripping of the throne of the Virgin and the simplicity of the clothes are characteristic of the production of the workshops in the Eastern Pyrenees.

This virgin in majesty has a remarkable state of conservation if we consider her initial use as a religious statue that accompanied, outside the walls of the church, the various liturgical manifestations and processions. Its small size, easily transportable, as well as the wear and tear on the face of Christ, which was embraced by the faithful, also testify to this devotional use
