Virgin of majesty - Eastern Pyrenees early 14th century

This Virgin of Majesty, known as "sedes sapientiae", still has her original polychrome and gilding. She is depicted in a hieratic way sitting on a throne with the child Jesus on her lap. The Virgin faces the spectator, she holds in her right hand a sphere and her divine son in her left arm. The latter is represented in Pantocrator. He owns the Holy Book and blesses the faithful with his opposite hand. Through her maternal attitude, by holding her son in her arms, it is the role of mother of God, Theotokos, that the artist wishes to evoke.
