Historical annecdote: The rose, known since the dawn of time in the wild (rosa canina) throughout the northern hemisphere, was already appreciated in ancient times among Egyptians, Greeks, Romans but also in China, Sumer, and to Babylon.
In the Middle Ages the rose was cultivated for its healing properties and fragrance.
From the Renaissance several varieties of ornamental roses appear and in the seventeenth century the gardener of Louis XIV, already evoked fourteen varieties. Until the middle of the eighteenth century, most of the cultivated roses were from the gallic rose which flowers only one month in summer. It is at the beginning of the XVIIIth century that one discovered varieties with continuous flowering come from Asia.
