Majolica - Castelfiorentino 16th century

Majolica, or maiolica, is a technique for producing earthenware with a brilliant glaze and metallic reflections, originating from "Moorish" Spain and which was a great success in Italy between the 14th and 16th centuries.

This plate, with a deep basin and thin wing, has a vegetal decoration with graffito. In the centre of this dish are the arms of Santa Maria Nuova Hospital, located near Florence.

The large size of this dish and its remarkable state of preservation make it all the more unique.
