Sculpture of an impoverished nobleman, 18th century - Attributed to Simon Troger

A rare sculpture in wood and ivory of an impoverished nobleman dressed in trunk hoses with strips of (ivory) fabric over a full inner layer. His worn clothes show parts of his arms and chest. His hat has a ragged edge, which is a "vanitas" symbole of deterioration and transience. His eyes are set with glass. The figure stand on a naturalistically carved base.

Attributed to Simon Troger (°1693 - +1768).
Southern Germany. 18th century.

Dimensions: H 27cm
