Pietà - Circle Of The Master Of Rabenden, Germany early 16th Century

This moving Pietà represents the Virgin carrying on her knees the lifeless body of her son. In Germany this type of work is known as "vesperbilds" owing to their incorporation into the liturgy of the evening prayer (vespers) . Like many other images of devotion produced in southern Germany in the early sixteenth century, this sculpture encourages the faithful to contemplate the suffering of Christ and to approach him empathically. It thus participates in the phenomenon of Devotio moderna, a vast movement of spiritual renewal which at the end of the Middle Ages develops and advocates a more affective vision of the Christian life. From a formal point of view, our work can be related to the production of the Master of Rabenden, an anonymous German artist baptized after one of his great masterpieces: the high altar of the Church of Rabenden , at the foothills of the Alps. The drama power of our group and its refined character are echoed in another Pietà attributed to the artist and preserved today at the Cleaveland Museum of Art (1938.294). The rendering of Christ's anatomy is very similar to that of our group, as are the fluid and animated draperies of the Virgin's mantle that are artificially curled at certain points, in contact with the ground, or the body of Christ.
