Alabaster sculpture of Nessus & Deianira. Trapani. 2nd half 17th C.

A fine sculptural group depicting the centaur Nessus and Deianira in alabaster with the original polychrome paint. The base has a phylactery with the names of the characters.

The subject of this alabaster sculpture is taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The centaur Nessus offers his services to Hercules in transporting his wife Deianeira across a swollen river. But as Nessus moves away into the turbulent water, he tries to abduct the young woman. Hercules detects the ruse and shoots an arrow at the centaur, mortally wounding him.

Trapani (Southern Italy). 2nd half of the 17th century.
