Victor Charreton was born in Bourgoin on March 2, 1864.
In 1885, he began to study law in Grenoble.
However, in 1902, he decided to devote himself entirely to painting and moved to Paris.
From 1905 to 1913, he frequently traveled to Algeria, Spain, England, Belgium, and Holland.
The tradition at the Lyon School was to paint many landscapes in oil and pastel, which Charreton did. He especially liked to paint landscapes reflecting impressionist style visions bathed in a colorful light.
He painted outdoors and preferred places which inspired him according to the season, lighting, and colors.
Auvergne, Brittany, and Provence were particularly dear to his heart throughout his lifetime.
This artist is situated just in between the end of Impressionism and the beginning of Fauvism. He is considered to be an initiator of Fauvism just like Guillaumin.

Our painting represents a vegetable garden in the fall. The artist used a rich color palette to represent the multiple nuances of the vegetation during this season. There is also a play of intertwined shadows on the walls of the property as they are illuminated by the light of the end of the day.
Victor Charreton painted this composition with a lot of pictorial material like he always does. He used nothing but paste and worked with a brush as well as he did a knife which ensured that the painting would have a remarkable relief. The break that is seen in the sky balances this beautiful composition.
