Monumental Snake Head - Alpine Arc 17th Century

This exceptional piece of woodwork depicts the face of a character forced by a tight rope at the base of his neck, the grimacing face of pain under the effect of the bites inflicted by two snakes at the temples. Carved in a resinous wood, this work of remarkable expressiveness can be dated from the 17th century and attributed to the Alpine arc, between Marseilles, Nice, Genoa and Milan. It is in one of these great cities that this head with tragic accents could have adorned a ceremonial hall, a theater perhaps ...
