Icon, Russia circa 1830-50 Moscow
The feast of the Saint is celebrated on March 30
Born about 570/79 Palestina died in 650 BC in Sinai, Egypt.
John Climakos has lived with hermits in Mount Sinai since the age of 16, then as a hermit in a cave.
In the year 638 AD. he became abbot of the St. Catherine Monastery of Sinai.
From that moment, he wrote his 30 chapters, "Klimax tou Paradeisou", the scale of paradise, which should guide the lives of monks in the awe of God.
This theme is also painted on this icon. Bottom right, Jean Climakos teaches the monks of his writing. On the ladder of heaven, after their death, the monks walk the 30 steps leading to paradise, accompanied by angels, but the disobedient monks fall off the ladder and end up in purgatory. At the end of the ladder, the monks are received by Christ and escorted to a banquet where John Climakos is already waiting for them in paradise.
Very good condition, with some repaints.
