Sculpture of Saint Jacques the Minor, Burgundy, 15th century
Statue representing Saint-James
Saint-James refers to several Christian saints or biblical figures, the most famous being the apostle James of Zebedee, known as James the Major.
We are here rather in the presence of James the Minor, holding a fulling stick, the instrument of his martyrdom.
Saint James of Alphaeus, cousin of Jesus, is also an apostle.
He carries the big stick with which fabric manufacturers used to beat wool sheets. He is the Saint of hat-makers.
Traces of polychromy and gilt on the whole. We see the canvas preparation appearing in some parts. The face is in better condition than the clothing.
Burgundy, second half of the 15th century.
