Anima Sola or Lonely Soul is an image depicting a soul in purgatory, popular in Latin America, as well as much of Andalusia, Naples and Palermo.
Placed either in the center of an offering dish, or in the center of a church trunk.
Instead of praying to a saint, who then calls on God, the anima sola represents the souls of purgatory who need the help of the living and the divine to improve their sufferings in heaven.
Southern Italy, 16th century
Good general condition, cleaning to be considered.
