Catalan Christ on the cross

Origin : Spain, Northern Catalonia
Period : 1st half of 13th century

Height : 181 cm
Length : 179 cm

Laid and polychrome resinous wood or poplar
Original polychromy present all over the body

The arms are extended to the horizontal and slightly raised. His head with closed eyes is tilted toward the right shoulder.

The face of Christ is rather appeased: mouth open, with long hair in large strands, joining a beard.

The crown of thorns by then always present consists of two intertwined strands and a small trace of blood figures on his head.

The anatomy is far from the Byzantine canons of beauty but we can still see sternal ridges on the chest.

The long perizonium placed lower than in previous centuries uncovering the abdomen, is held by a proeminent link under the fabric. It is bordered by a painted decoration of three lines: red, black and gold.
