Rare pair of stools in walnut, in its original lacquer "gray Trianon" *.
Model called "feet" including the large and small oval shaped stool.
The belts of godrons friezes connected by dice with flowers and supported by wide feet with cut sides rudentées of a single groove.
Perfect state of conservation.
Work of Pierre Pillot, Provence around 1790.

Large stool: height: 30 cm; diameter 52 cm
Small stool: Height: 22 cm; diameter 30 cm

Our opinion:

This type of pair of stools is referred to as "pair of foot stools" in the ancient inventories of the inner chambers or small cabinets of the royal castles.
It seems to appear in France in the middle of the 18th century and meets a great success from the 1780s.
The height of refinement, these seats for care and footwear are reserved for an elite.
One of the emblematic examples of this fashion and the pair delivered by Georges Jacob for Queen Marie Antoinette's room in 1788 at Versailles and still preserved at the castle. (Photo)
Pierre Pillot's unmistakable style with its cut-off feet of a single groove, reinforced by their Montpellier origin allows us a certain attribution.
This cabinetmaker installed market street in Nîmes from the 1780s is one of the greatest Provencal carpenters of the reign of Louis XVI.
Of Parisian origin and knowing the last fashions in force in Paris, He became the official supplier of the Provençal nobility and realized a lot of big together for the castles of the South of France (lounges, beds, consoles, broken duchess etc)
Preserved in the same family since their origin, the pair we present today is extremely rare.

* The lacquer "gray Trianon", used in particular Versailles is an inimitable gray, mentioned a few times in the old inventories as "under olive leaves".
Recent work of restoration finally allowed to pierce the secret of this color, it is in fact a soft green having turned gray with the centuries.
