Green patinated bronze on the original marble base around 1880 / Italy / Naples.
The identity of the representation is unclear to this day. Archaeologists attribute it to the mythological figures of Dionysus or the philosopher Plato.
The Swiss archaeologist Karl Weber discovered this representation around 1750 during his excavations at Villa dei Papiri, near Herculaneum in the Gulf of Naples.
During these excavations, many busts of the Hellenic era were discovered. In the second half of the 19th century, Prof. Chiurazzi found a foundry from which he obtained permission from the National Museum of Naples to melt copies of these busts.
Very good quality.
