Ivory depicting the Crucifixion ,Salerno ,Italy,11th century
An ivory plate of ogival shape, carved in half-relief, representing the Christ on the cross with Saint John and the Virgin Mary, and two angels in the upper register, and the birth of the Virgin (?) in the lower register.
Note the complexity of the interlace decoration of birds and foliage ,a reminiscence of Byzantine influence, present in the Salernitans workshops in Italy.
Salerno was one of the major centers of ivory work in the 11th century.
