Antonio Selvi was a gifted student of Massimiliano Soldani-Benzi who was the Medici appointed heir to Giambologna's position and Selvi was primarily known as a maker of relief works. He made a celebrated series of medals that commemorated the Medici family and this particularly well done relief portrait portrays Averardo de Medici (1320-1363) who was the father of the founder of the Medici Bank who came to create the Medici art patronage dynasty. The reverse illustrates a parable with a naturalistic depiction of a dog and a goose.
