Oak figural "poppy-head" with devil or pixie Circa 1450-1500

A very rare figural finial from an English church pew, also known as a 'poppy-head' with the very expressive face of a tongue-pulling devil, imp or pixie with large ears, animalesque features and spiky hair carved in relief on one side and a ‘Tudor Rose’ flower carved in relief on the other. The reliefs are framed by graceful ribbed surrounds and the whole is carved from a single piece of oak.

The surface of the poppy-head appears to be all original with remnants of paint and a soft, greatly worn and untouched patina. On the back (flower side) there is a remnant of leather nailed onto the surface, possibly a very old repair.

England. Circa 1450-1500.

Dimensions: height 29,5cm or 11 5/8" ; width (at base) 26,7cm or 10 1/2" ; depth 7,3cm or 2 7/8"
