Bridge and river in Auvergne - Victor CHARRETON (1864-1936)

Oil on canvas Bridge and river in Auvergne by Victor CHARRETON

March 2, 1864 at the castle of Bourgoin (Isère). Died on November 26, 1936 in Clermont-Ferrand.
French Painter of landscapes, flowers, painter the gouache, pastellist. Postimpressioniste
Teenager from a wealthy family, a geometric painter he already loves poetry and painting, and practices the latter as an amateur
He will study law at the Faculty of Grenoble and will be admitted to the court of appeal . Equipped with a great sensitivity and very cultivated, his companions of paintings are called Ernest Hareux, Armand Balouzet and Louis Japy.
He married in 1893 with Elmy Chatin, daughter of an entrepreneur from La Sauvetat (Puy-de-Dôme). It was with a view of Montpeyroux (Puy-de-Dôme) that he exhibited for the first time in 1894 at the Salon of the Lyon Society of Fine Arts.
The acquisition of a house in Saint-Ammand-Tallende (Puy-de-Dome) further strengthens its ties with Auvergne. He started at the Salon de Lyon in 1894 and in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français. He will receive many medals: honorable mention in 1910, silver medal in 1912, gold medal in 1913.
He will participate in exhibitions in all France, but also Geneva New York, in Japan ... In 1902, he sells his study to devote himself to his art. Using both cardboard and canvas, he uses both the knife and brush. In 1903 he co-founded with the painter Bonnard, the Salon d'Automne. His success is rapid and his reputation soon exceeds the circle of salons. He is decorated with the legion of honor as a painter in 1914
President of many exhibition juries, he works on the writing of articles on the finality of art and the theories of colors. He also looks at the conservation techniques of the works. This research allows him to discover painting on "finette" (fluffy fabric that allows him to reinforce the vaporous character of his paintings).

It was during the war that he lived the longest in Auvergne where he concentrated on the snow and tried to extract all the aspects (icy, powdery, etc.).

His work is marked by the intimate treatment of the landscape, preferring to vast spaces, details and giving little space to the strong points of the landscape of the Walloon, such as the castle, the lake, the Dent du Marais.
Leading artist, his success is still true today. He rubbed shoulders with many personalities (art critics, politicians, painters, etc.). Its membership in the school Murol is a major asset for it.
