Virgin "Annunciation" in carved wood and polychrome, around 1520

The Virgin carved in round hump stands, slightly swayed, in an elegant and reserved attitude.
She is wearing a belted dress at the waist, covered with a long coat with broken pleats that reflect the Gothic influences still present.
The round face of Mary, with closed eyes, expresses a great sweetness. His beautiful wavy hair falls freely on his shoulders and down to his back.

Hispanic-Flemish work
Softwood
original polychrome
circa 1520

Historical anecdote : The Annunciation is a privileged theme in Gothic sculpture as well as in the statuary of the Renaissance. Marie is represented holding a book (the angel Gabriel interrupts it in her reading) in a reserved attitude where one can detect a feeling of modesty and sweet melancholy.
