Dutch-Colonial "coco de mer" box, 2nd half 18th C.

A rare Dutch-Colonial box made from a "coco de mer" or "Lodoicea maldivica", the world largest seed found on the Seychelles Islands. The coco de mer has custom made brass hinges and locking devices, which are typical for the 2nd half of the 18th century.

Dimensions: 30cm x 30cm x H 17,5cm

In excellent condition with a beautiful patina. The underside has two small holes, probably by which it was once mounted on a base.
