Pair of Kaï Oke Boxes for the Game of Shells

Pair of lacquered boxes on a ro-iro lacquer (black) with pine decoration and stylized foliage in hira maki-e with gold lacquer. These boxes, octagonal in shape, were used for the "game o fshells". The original stand features a 6-circle Mon (crest) (mutsu boshi) among the foliage and corresponding to the Matsu-moto's Jo-Mon.
The game of shells called Kai awase or Kai oï was played with 360 bivalve shells. On one half was written a poem while the other carried an image. The game consisted of pairing the images with the corresponding poetry. Other versions of this game also exist.
Total height: 45cm. Time: Meiji (1868-1912)
