4-Compartment Inro with Mandarin Ducks Design
The decoration of gold lacquer (fundame) ground and gold powder (nashiji) and small gold leaves (kirigane) represent mandarin ducks sliding on the water among bamboos. Geese in flight enliven the other face of the inro. The polychrome feathers of mandarins is lovely. The ojime is made of hard stone of coral color. An ivory netsuke of a duck with clear and brown patina adorns the end of the inro. A snake is wrapped around the duck. Origin: Japan. Late Edo period (1603-1868) 19th century. Unsigned. Good condition.
