Pair of French Empire Two-light Candleholders

On a plain square plinth rests a column with a diamond pattern of rosettes. At the base of the column a convex flange decorated with stylized palmettes.

On top of the column a winged Amor in patinated bronze in contrapposto with the relaxed leg in front of the engaged leg holding a bow in one hand and an arrow in the other. The sculptures are each other’s mirror image.

Behind the sculpture a vexillum of which the joist is composed of a bow and arrow with a rose at the top. Laurel wreaths hang from the ends of the joist. The banner shows a crossed quiver and torch surrounded by a wreath of roses.

Urn-shaped candleholders decorated with laurels, stylized palmettes and arrowheads are placed at the end of the joists.

These candleholders exhibit exuberant symbolism associated with love. Almost all elements of the decoration are a reference to Amor, which suggests that these objects were, without a doubt, intended for a bedroom.
