A pair from the Artus collection, presented at the centennial exhibition of 1900 in Paris. (which could be ours)

Pierre Paraud, Parisian goldsmith of the emperor is active between 1800 and 1812, he is specialized in the liturgical pieces.
The emperor entrusted to him the silverware of the royal chapel of Tuileries whose museum of the Louvre today preserves some datable pieces of the years 1806 (Benitier and his Goupillon), 1809 (Calice, burettes), 1812 (Patène) and even 1813 (Ciborium, realized or at least delivered by his widow).
His inventory after death in 1812 includes, in addition to religious pieces, a few pairs of torches that were priced at high prices.
Our style pair clearly back from Egypt is similar to the pair kept in the Louvre Museum.
The latter comes from the imperial collections of the Russian tsars where it entered on June 11, 1881 as the numbers of inventories engraved on their bases indicate.
This date corresponds to a diplomatic rapprochement between France and Russia, and the surrender by Tsar Alexander III of the order of St Andrew to the President of the Sadi Carnot Republic.
It is very likely that this pair of torches was a diplomatic gift from the national collections, the Russian imperial family is very fond of this type of room.
All these clues lead us to believe that this model of torches was originally sponsored for the imperial palaces.
This assumption was reinforced by the fact that even the elite of the empire was content with bronze for most luminaries.
The pair that we present, in perfect condition and similar to that of the Louvre Museum, is a very rare example of goldsmithery under the consulate and at the beginning of the empire.
