Bronze ding vessel, Song Dynasty, 11th-13th century

An important bronze "ding" vessel, a type of ancient Chinese cooking or holding vessel, with two handles on the rim and supported by three stubby legs without ornamentation. The handles are held by "taotie" or monster mask, which are placed frontal and bilaterally symmetrical with a pair of raised eyes and typically no lower jaw area. The body and the lid are profusely engraved with floral and geometric design. The lid is surmounted by three recumbent hounds.
