Set of 8 swedissh armchairs with aubusson tapestries attributed to ohrmark

Set of eight chairs with flat file in molded chestnut, carved, green gray relaqué and gold rechampi decorated with friezes of greek and foliage, tapered fluted legs. Foreign work of the late 18th century garnished with beautiful Aubusson tapestries with polychrome decoration of birds.

By his coup d'etat of August 1772, Gustave III became King of Sweden and looked on the side of France, understanding that what was happening in his country was close to French concerns. People of the spirit and philosophers maintain with him a constant correspondence concerning the new ideas to emerge.
His attachment to France led him to come to the Court of Versailles in 1783-1784.
It was during this trip that the neoclassical forms he discovered, relayed by his visit to Pompeii and Herculaneum, will invest Swedish palaces.
Jean-Baptiste Masreliez will even be asked by the sovereign to come to Paris to study and see how to implement these new precepts in his country. Masreliez, a brilliant sculptor and ornamentalist, was none other than the son of Adrien Masreliez, a French sculptor and ornamentist who arrived in Stockholm in 1748.
This renowned sculptor worked extensively with a seating manufacturer named Eric Ohrmark.
When we study the production of this manufacturer of seats we realize that the French forms are in the spotlight: chairs with a square back, chairs in cabriolet, etc ....
The castles of Tullgarn, Haga keep seats in this spirit.
