Mr de Montarant, in grey striped costume and vest, holding a snuffbox decorated with a miniature portrait with a red attire. Signed and dated 1788
18th Century Miniature portrait on ivory
Monmerqué, whose identity is not yet known. He was a miniature painter active between 1788 and 1800. His works are rare and this one, very delicately executed is the first one recorded.
The first name of M. de Montarant is not given at the back of the miniature. He was perhaps Charles-Hugues de Montarant, perpetual secretary of the Royal free School of drawing in Paris.
