An Ivory and Shibayama style Tanto

Beautiful tanto ivory with inlays of mother-of-pearl, coral and hard stones in the style called shibayama. The decoration represents on the handle a basket woven with a bouquet of flowers. On one side a crane is placed at the edge of a stream of mother-of-pearl and flowering branches and butterfly. On the other side a peacock is placed on the trunk of a wisteria in bloom. The blade is carved with a horimono on each side of a finely chiseled dragon. The sculpture of the whole ivory is particularly fine and in perfect condition. Origin: Japan.
Period : Meiji (1868-1912). Length : 35cm (13.7").
