Left hand and forearm of an Ancient Egyptian statue

A left hand and part of the forearm of a large wooden statue, with remains of the original paint. The hand, with beautifully detailed fingernails, is clenched into a fist with the - now missing - thumb resting on the remaining fingers. A cavity forms inside the fist, which might originally have held something (a papyrus role?). The surface of the arms has a number of tiny wooden pegs of unidentified function.

Egyptian, Middle Kingdom, XIIth Dynasty, 1990-1785 B.C.

Provenance: ex art & antique trade (Belgium) ; previously in the private collection of Mr. M. P. (Brussels), assembled between 1980 and 1990.

Dimensions: length 22,5cm
