Mounted "coprolite, early Jurassic Period

"coprolite", beautifully mounted on a turned and black lacquered wooden base with a beaded copper collar. A coprolite is fossilized feces, classified as trace fossils as opposed to body fossils, as they give evidence for the animal's behaviour (in this case, diet) rather than morphology. The name is derived from the Greek words ?????? (kopros, meaning "dung") and ????? (lithos, meaning "stone"). Coprolites have had much of their original composition replaced by mineral deposits such as silicates and calcium carbonates.

This "coprolite" would have once been part of a late 19th century museum, collector's cabinet of curiosities or that of a paleontologists.

Early Jurassic Period. 200 million to 176 million years old. The stand dates to the Napoleon III era, 2nd half of the 19th century.

Dimensions: height 19cm
