Rare and important Suzuribako. Japanese lacquer urushi. The exterior is decorated with both of the large Shishi carefully patterned. The interior of the lid is decorated with a steep rocky coast with a temple, in gold and silver takamaki-e, the craggy cliffs are enhanced by cavities carved into the takamaki-e. Hiramaki-e, kirigane, uchikomi, kimetsuke and tsukegaki techniques of lacquer. Dense nashiji ground. The rims are fundame. Empty. 9 in. x 8.3 in x 1.8 in. Japan Edo (1603-1868) end of 17th, early 18th century.
