A small japanese lacquer 4 cases Inro. Gold Takamaki-e lacquer and mother-of-pearl inlaid of ringed plovers over waves on a black ground. Black lacquer inside. The lyrical motif of a flock of ringed plovers flying above evening-tinged waves and rocks – Yunami Chidori if first encountered in the 266 poem from the Man’ Yoshu, Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves, compiled c.760, the earliest japanese anthology of poetry. Its setting is Lake Biwa, at that time known as the Omi Sea, the viewer becomes melancholy on catching sight of the flock of birds piping in flight above the waves and recalls earlier better times.
