Alcide Le Beau (1873-1943) - The Chausey Islands

Alcide Le Beau was born in Lorient in 1873. Starting at a young age, he is passionate about painting. He is first a teacher before becoming an artist, and it is when he visits Pont-Aven on his free time that he starts painting.
In 1886, Le Beau participates in exhibitions at the Le Barc de Boutteville Gallery in Paris.
In 1903, he exhibits at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris and then in 1905, at the Salon d’Automne in room VII, (the same room where the group of artists “cage aux fauvres” were qualified by the art critic Louis Vauxcelles). Presented in this room are the paintings of Derain, Matisse, Marquet, Vlaminck, Camoin, Manguin, etc.
In parallel, he participates in group exhibitions at the Berthe Weil Gallery in Paris in 1903 and 1904, alongside Luce, Marquet, Matisse, and Dufy. He also participates at the Durand-Ruel Gallery in 1911, La Boétie Gallery with the group of artists “la section d’or”, in the big exhibition of French art at the Moos Galley in 1918, and at the Kunsthalle de Berne in 1939, alongside André Lhote and Maria Blanchard.

Le Beau goes on several trips to Provence, Corsica, and Corfu, from 1905 to 1907.

In 1907, he presented a personal exhibition of forty paintings during his fauvist period at the Druet Gallery in Paris.
In 1922, two exhibitions were dedicated to his artwork at the Musée Pissarro de Pontoise, and at the Musée de Pont-Aven.
Also, Le Salon d’Automne of 1946 organized a retrospective of his artwork. The Barbizon Gallery does the same thing in 1973.

Le Beau maintains an intimate connection with nature that he expresses through thick brushstrokes that are triturated with lustrous colors, and results in a canvas that is covered with a much smoother and synthesized form.

He dies in Sanary in 1943.
