This figure of two Loves fighting for the destiny of a dove nestling at their feet represents Eros and his brother Anteros, who opposes, in Greek mythology, an endless struggle for strength and purity of feelings. In the sixteenth century, neo-Platonic ideas took up this myth by seeing a hostile rivalry between Anteros, symbolizing heavenly love and Eros, personifying earthly love. The surprising gesture of one of the two Loves, who seems to want to destroy the dove at his mercy, perhaps evokes this interpretation. The dove is the favorite bird of Aphrodite, mother of Eros and Anteros. The dove and garland nest of flowers and foliage are attributes of the goddess of love, Aphrodite. they also evoke the charms of sensual love. The erotic metaphors of the work are reminiscent of the numerous rococo-style marble statues, known as "commandées", which were used mainly in France in the 18th century, among others under the patronage of the Marquise de Pompadour.
