Medieval ivory figure of a Saint, North of Spain, XI-XIIth century

Small and delicate Romanesque ivory statuette in very good condition, presumably representing the figure of a saint. Carved in the round and designed for a frontal viewpoint, the man is holding a "volumen" with his left hand and brings his right hand to his chest, a gesture to express respect and adoration in medieval christian tradition.

The head's morphology, of round features and prominent eyes, as well as the hair rendering by means of parallel schematic incisions, are characteristic aspects of this period. In the same sense, the long and gentle straight-lined folds of the drapery are consistent with the aesthetic of the similar ivory examples produced in the workshops of Leon, Logroño or Asturias to respond to the numerous demand of caskets and lithurgical objects favoured during the XIth and XIIth centuries by the splendour of the route of Santiago de Compostela.

Dimensions: 8,7 high
Condition: Very good. Toes of one foot lacking.
